Chief is in. Dutch is in. Posted on GIO. "Potential Ride tomorrow. Lunch in Ben Wheeler. KSU from Valero in Lone Oak at 1000 hrs. Highlight of the ride is on 779 south of Emory which is a 2 laner that rocks. Return route is optional depending on how much time folks have. Lunch location: The Forge. Overall ride over 100 miles total (closer to 140 via map below) Chime in if interested, here or privately." As usual .... crickets. Snooze you 'Looze'!
From Lone Oak Valero the three of us headed out right on time..... to a beautiful morning in the 70s and nothing but sunshine. Soon as we got into Emory grabbed Hwy 19 for a few hundred feet then turned south towards 779. Once on 779 we were rolling 5 over the limit into Grand Saline. We're rolling at about 75mph when in the middle of the road up head is a huge bird munching on road kill in the center. Historically, they always scatter, but this time ... it's in slow motion. As I'm coming up on it, he's headed the same direction I am, but I catching up with him quickly.. at the last second he banks to the left as my helmetless head is within inches of his claws hanging down...... wouza! Close Call. Then off to the left we spot a bald eagle swooping in the trees. Cool story to tell, this version of! We then take 110 over to some other country roads with beautiful sights and zero traffic all the way into Ben Wheeler. The Forge was our destination and its always a good time. Great waitress, awesome food. Other guys were "good" but I had two Ultras. Then, we're rolling but work our way towards Golden where the Chief took over the lead. Hit two spots of construction but we soon were hauling ass 10 over most of the way home. Really dug this route crossing Lake Fort multiple times. Can't help but think this would make for a great Chapter ride, assuming one could ever herd the cats? Sorry ... couldn't resist. By the time we roll in temps are closer to 90 but feels good in the wind. Pulling up to the house, 155 miles on the odometer have rolled by. Glorious two lane miles!
Two Lane Heaven in East TX
Pasta / Fettucine with Ribeye.. to die for!
Dude was falling asleep standing up! bahahaha
Next Up ... Chapter Mtg on Saturday. Three of us are rolling in from Greenville. But as I type this ... fucking crickets for others to join in. Sad
Well, this is starting to come together. Folks are chiming in ... may have up to 6 or 8 of us riding down? As I type this though only Dutch and I have committed 100% to the ride down.
Per my GIO post this morning:
Weather Looks awesome on the 14 day forecast .. all days. Sunny and Warm!
I'm going to track all that reply ... I'll update every few days as necessary. Ennis might be the best spot to meet up for a few, but will improvise as necessary for max participation. Lot of moving pieces that I'm aware of of some folks getting bikes ready, medical issues, debating on cage or motorcycle. I envision several short stops along the way. We can do a short lunch stop in there as well of course. Here's the info I have to date. Looking forward to a great weekend and a nice ride down there. Feel free to msg me privately with any updates/discussion, etc or reply here of course..

I needed a part for my pool last weekend, so called our local pool supply store. No go, but they had the part at the Wylie store 35 miles away. Found it on the Internet a notch cheaper but would take several days to show. Well, the light bulb came on and put it out there to a few friends..... "anyone want to do a breakfast Monday morning Ride towards Wylie?" ... Got 2 nibbles!
Immediately put it on GIO to see if anyone else wanted to join us; crickets. Swamp Rat recommended a Taco Truck there off Hwy 205, so it's game on. Around 0800 Chief and I headed out 69 to 66, then up 6 over to 78 then 205. And, there it was! Really nice looking truck, that they parked there and built up aroound it with a lot of picnic tables, many in the shade, under cover. Ten minutes later Mario pulls up and we've got a lil meeting, Mexican style. One thing that is jumping at me is all the f'n traffic. This used to be 'country' out here; those days are gone. Housing area after housing area popping up, concrete trucks everywhere rolling down Hwy 205 and 78. Dallas is expanding at an alarming rate ... crazy. Makes me appreciate where I live that much more. Well, after an hour or so .... catching up and bullshitting, it's time to go.
Leslie's pool supply is only 3 miles away so we grab my pool part and headed home a different way. We roll through Rockwall on John King Blvd which is lined with lots of modern beautiful homes, down to 276 then rolling towards Quinlan. SWG has opened yet, so I continue on into Tawakoni to the American Legion. BUT, they don't open until noon, and it's only 1100. So, we do a first .... AMVETS. I've seen this location for years, looks like a dump from the highway side so never ventured in. But, I joined nationally as a life member a few months ago, so determined to check it out. Turns out you have to venture around to the back, which is actually the 'front', that has a view of the lake. Huh.. .never realized. Head on in and I'm kinda liking this place. Not enough room to have a Chapter mtg in the future, but large enough for a small contingent to roll in for some cold ones. On the calendar for a future ride!
AMVVETS
American Legion ... but.. closed :(
After a few cold ones, Chief and I head home. One hundred blissful miles on the odometer later, Home Sweet Home. Next up .. .Wed lunch ride!
Few days ago, Dutch told us he was playing at lunch time, so ... RIDE it is! Put it out on Group.io and we are rolling. Myself, Lucy, and the Chief rolled out 513 to Campbell where we met up with Dutch and Swamp Rat. C-Word had hoped to make it but had to back out. So, we rolled into Greenville via country roads, successfully staying off Interstate the entire day. Pulled up to the TEXAN in a spot right out front; perfect!
I've been here a few times, but never for the Wednesday Lunch Show with Friendlee Radio Show. It rocked! My buddy Charlie Smith was playing with Dutch up on stage and it made for a great Lunch 'show'.
Perfect spot to Park!
Soon.. we're back on bikes, temps are creeping towards 100deg so we couldn't get home quick enough.... another great lunch ride in the books!
Funny how times change... or maybe I'm changing. Or maybe I'm just getting old and crusty ? GET OFF MY GRASS! There, I feel better.
Just a few years ago, email was our primary tool. Worked well, great for archival.. but .. in my opinion, folks don't use email correctly and shit can get out of control easily. Then, when Dutch was PRO he created several FB Messenger chats, official, everyday , etc... 2 or 3 of them. It actually really stepped up the overall communication process within the chapter. But, I do remember thinking 'don't we only need one?' .... still, it was working. Only thing I didn't like was important info sometimes got 'buried' in there due to other BS chat. There is also the private FB Group for our chapter but most never really use that one. Then less than a year ago we moved to Groups.IO for all 'official communication.' In my opinion, this is a great tool but hasn't caught on. Many folks, some who are pretty intelligent .. just haven't figured out how to use it correctly, IMHO. Simple as that. In the meantime along with the Groups.io process, some of the FB messengers groups were killed off leaving just one. So, most of the chat/communication is done on a FB messenger group/chat. That's not necessarily a good thing btw. Lot of BSing. Random posts. Then folks want to meet up and well.. it gets lost in the maze of traffic. Last week, the name of it was changed to emphasize it was non official.. Huh .. no shit... but .. why change the name? Then I see yesterday someone was added to it that isn't a member, but might join. I even asked why, and was reminded someone else in there isn't an active member and did I have a problem with that? Why yes... actually, I do have a problem with that. I've voiced that before and ... fell on deaf ears. Only three should be on there... FULL, SUPPORT and AUX. Why is that so hard to understand? Then, the final straw for me... "please remember this messenger is for non cvma chapter business. We have a non members in here. It is just a general bs chat page".
Well, because there is so much 'general bs' I was considering punching out a while back off that chat group.. but didn't want to miss out on something 'important' that might get discussed there and not elsewhere, but was pretty painful to me personally to wade through all the nonsense that gets posted there. So, that comment made about the use of that chat group... made it simple to leave. I'm done with it, out of there. To be honest , Group.io gives me 90% of what I need. FB Groups/Pages (not the chat messenger BS) give me 9% of the rest (events, etc). I've got a cell phone that I can call or text for any info I'm missing or need that I can't get anywhere else. What I don't want or need, is more continuous BS. I don't have time for it. Don't care about 90% of that pure BS that gets posted.
Now.. if folks would just learn to utilize Groups.io to its fullest extent. You know... besides saying "Happy Birthday ... xxxx" How the fuck is that Official Business?
UPDATE: Had a conversation with a chapter member about this ... and I gave an example. Had to do with something I posted this morning on FB Group. I pointed out that the chapter meetings weren't there. Member said where do you find them then? On the group.. on the page? I said no... apparently only on the web page. They went to FB page and said "its not there.". I said.. you're not on the public web page, you're on the FB Page. They said "what web page?" And that ... is probably how MOST would respond. Folks, this ain't my first rodeo. Most don't know what I do for a living... js. They then said "why don't they announce it to all to ONLY check the Web Page?" Hahaha.. I love the way this goes..... sorry, I see the humor in all this shit. I can't even bring this up internally becuase I just get smart ass responses..... they'll figure it out eventually. **sigh***
Now.. GET OFF MY GRASS!!!!
You know want to attend .. So, Groups I O (GIO) Class is NOW in session .... click her to get a clue >> Groups.io .............. "tricks" <<
Well, it's official . Just finished the Tri-State which means accomplished all three for 2022. Also did the Inner-State and Tri-Sate last year. Feels good to finally have this behind me .... I've wrote about the multiple 'almost' tabs in the past. Took a lil' planning to make this happen this year.. but.. I'm smiling! Rx'd an email today that it's awarded but the 201 won't update until it ships... still... sweet.
I'm already scheming and dreaming for 2023. My hope is by Nationals to have completed all three 2023 tabs .. hey .. could happen!

Here's the funny part ... few hours later, I see where Dudeman posts this update... literally hours after I ordered the other Tab.. .oh well... I'll park the other three '22 tabs in a bag for history.... The GRAND SLAM that replaces the other three, has been officially released and I just requested it...
Good Times! Been planning on this one for quite some time. Back on 2 MAR posted info on GIO to get things moving from a chapter perspective. Even posted on it HERE. I've got to tell you ... sort of disappointing. Well, from a chapter perspective, not from a personal perspective. Personally, it rocked.
Was originally going to be several of us rolling up ... but ... folks started falling by the wayside. Rocky .. no word from. Boudreaux had a conflict and had to back out. Chief decided to go up a day early with KAL; all good. Several others in the chapter either didn't reach out about their travel times at all, or had to leave later. When the smoke cleared, it was Dutch and I rolling up Friday morning. We rolled out of GVL around 0800 and lil' over 4 hours later into Lawton. Temps were 70deg when we left, low 90s when we rolled in without a cloud in the sky ... Perfecto! Got to the Hilton several hours early than check in time, so headed next door for some cold ones to the Brewery. We where there less than an hour when some folks I recognized from LA rolled in, Olllie and Eazy Det. Bought them their first round (they did the same for me later), and the Roundup is on! Thirty minutes later, someone taps me on the shoulder and says "is that your bike that fell on it's side?". I jerk my head to the left to look out the window (all is good), then over my right shoulder with a "FUCK YOU!" .. and realize, I've just spoken my first words ever to our National President "Mutt"... whoops! Apparently he likes to do this to many to fuck with them.... hahaha.. .. GOT ME .. all is good! I immediately take a liking to this guy ... he and Cool Shot park it to our left on some stools and we've now got half the bar top populated with CVMA. Still, gotz to check in .. so after a few hours we meander back to the Hotel and we're checking in. Chief rolls up in perfect timing from their sight seeing and ... we're all at the hotel!.
Cool Shot, myself and Mutt
Bike on it's side :)
Checking in
Few hours go by, cleaned up and sipping beers downstairs, we've also connected up with Boomer and Yaya along with a few others.. and we all head to the Pre Party at the local VFW where there are hundreds of bikes parked. Drinks are flowing in the bar, the local chapter is putting on an "Indian Taco" dinner which was really good, with a shit load of desserts yum! Before we got too fired up , headed back to the hotel to park the bikes and hit the hotel bar and outside area to knock out some cigars Dutch has brought. Dudeman finds us to bust some balls. Chief, Dutch and Myself.... close the bar. . Zzzzzzzzzz
Saturday is a day of riding for Dutch and I. At the Diamondback HD dealer early, hit their store, line up and we are rolling for a short 35 mile run they are hosting. Prior we do a patch in for a few new members with an awesome opening ceremony from one of the local Indian Tribes. Boomer gave one of his great speeches as always as well as leading the patch in ceremony. Few hours later, back at the dealer .. and .. we're thirsty/hungry so find a nearby place to eat. We've connected up with CHENG and Honey Badger this morning so they join us for grub. Chief and KAL are out hitting museums, etc. so they aren't with us. Gotta admit, that A/C in the joint felt good! Temps have been rising slowly, into the 90s. Few cold ones and .. I feel a nap coming on... so Dutch and I roll back to get some shut eye in our rooms. Hour goes by and time for Ride #2. We meet up and we're headed back to the HD dealer to line up for the 1600 hrs. ride. Turns out, this is the good one. We put on more than double the morning miles and the group is less than 3 dozen bikes. Nice lil twisties and tight turns through the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge area. Unfortunately we didn't see any buffalo like others did earlier that day, but the range area outside Ft Sill is beautiful. Before Sunset we're back at the VFW for a post party. Was wondering what to do for dinner but they surprise us with a BBQ setup that was really good! Make it to about 2030 hrs, but the sun is going down and... need to get back before the alcohol sets in. Back to the hotel and Dutch and I join up for a few at the hotel bar; I'm beat.
Soon it's 0600 and my eyes are open; time for some grub. They've got a pretty good breakfast downstairs so ... try it again. Then, time to pack up and clean up, then I'm soon downstairs again. Everyone is popping out of the woodwork ... Boomer, Mutt , Dudeman ... Chief .. Dutch ... back slaps, hugs, folks are rolling home. Gotten to have some great conversations with folks... met OSCAR this trip out of 7-8 (LA Little Rock area). Still, it's hard to believe it's time to go. Apparently CHENG rolled out already around 0800, Delco and Boots say they are running late.. so ... it's just myself, Dutch and Chief / KAL rolling back; 2 bikes and a trike. We're all fueled up so just a notch before 0830 .. we are rolling. Temps are low 70s ... working up to 95 before we hit Greenville. Cruised along at the speed limits, sometimes five over. Again, not a cloud in the sky. Highlight of this one is we reached out to Lucy who joined us for lunch in Greenville as we finished our weekend ride. Perfect.
p.s. This was my final piece of the puzzle for LRRP Tri-State ..... submitted!
Awesome Ride/Temps
Now.. for my gripe session. I mentioned I put this out there back in March. For the most part this fell on deaf ears. No discussions for the most part. No one chiming in on joining the ride there or back. A few days before leaving a few chimed in on riding up there, but ... no one seemed to want to ride up as a chapter. I get some of the situations. But overall, got to say I'm disappointed at some level. It's almost embarrassing how many folks don't participate in some of these events. We have approximately 70 in our chapter; 12 showed up and only one of them is on the CEB. We didn't ride up as a Group/Chapter. I believe Regionals is a big deal. Just as State is.. and Nationals. But for some reason ..... from my perspective... Regionals is shunned by our chapter. I know quite a few folks (before my time in the CVMA) went in '17...but .. since then .. minimal. I don't get it. It's awesome to see our fellow members from other states. Always great to meet new folks and reunite with some that we've met over the years. At the same time and on a related note, it's beyond my grasp why folks don't ride up as a group. It's like beating your head against a wall to get folks to line up... .. ? Yes, I realize some folks have financial limitations. Schedule limitations... but as a whole.... hmm... I call BS. How about we fucking participate?? Once there, why not ride as a chapter back? Hmmmmmmmm.....js
Oh well, I'll continue to put the info out there. State should be an interesting one. I've already put it out there, but just like Regionals, fucking crickets. I've put out a potential route.... but.. fucking crickets. I'm sure as we get closer, someone will post an alternate route, rolling straight down I-35. That just sounds exciting! Lotsa concrete! :) Next month when I post about State .. we'll see if I called it right? Me personally .. I'll be rolling down 2 lanes most of the way, taking a whole extra 45 minutes or so, enjoying nice scenery and riding through small towns.... .. you know.. sort of like this past weekend?
Yesterday, breakfast... .today ... we'll use Lunch as an excuse! Brought it up to Dutch, Chief and Boudreaux. Chief is prepping for Regionals, Boudreaux can't make it and he's headed out of town tomorrow to 'trike' his Indian, but Dutch can make it. I see where C-Word chimed in yesterday on our ride, so made sure she knew so looks like her and Slingblade may make it! Weather rocks again, Dutch picked out a place off Hwy 66 so it'll be 2 lane most of the way out west to Rockwall. Lets Roll! Post it on GIO; it's official
Top off at QT .. Dutch rolls up ready to go. C-Word pulls up alone a few minutes later and tops off. She's a rock star today coming in from Royce City to simply turn around and head back that way with us. We soon line up and rolling down Hwy 66 on a beautiful 80 degree 'morning.' I've forgotten how much the Royce City, Fate and Rockwall areas are building up. New housing areas everywhere. Soon, Hwy 66 will succumb to the same fate as Hwy 380 with wider lanes, more lights and crazy traffic? Probably another five years or so, but it appears to be coming ... sadly. Soon as we get into downtown Rockwall, we pull up to this lil parking area; our destination .. an old school diner.
Inside, it just feels 'right.' Has that small town feel to it still. Menu rocks as does the food that comes out; we order Chicken Fried Steak and Rueben sandwiches - winners! Dutch was here last weekend, but it's a first for myself and C-Word; 'I'll be back' as Arnie would say? We catch up on all the latest, discuss the upcoming Cancer Run specifics, solve the problems of the world and ... chat about riding and life in general. Most importantly, we promise to ensure C-Word is aware of our future weekday rides. Her hubby Slingblade works from home so we're hoping he can join us on some future rides.......
Soon.... rolling home. C-Word breaks off homeward bound when we get east of Royce City and Dutch and I head into Greenville on separate errands. Few stops later, home sweet home by 1430 hours and updating this blog and DRP miles.
What makes a good Road Captain? Surprise Surprise, I have an opinion! LOL Several years ago I was our Road Captain here at 23-11 but gave it up after realizing the CO at that time and I were at odds. Basically, I didn't sign up for any BS nor serving his personal agenda so I walked away from it.... but in that short period, and based on my decades of riding experience leading group rides ..... well... I still have an opinion ... go figure?
In my world... this means several simple things...
Planning Chapter Rides. These are far and few between! I did a few small ones, but trying to get the entire chapter together on a weekend is like pulling teeth... herding chickens...call it what you want. My travel schedule caused me some pain here so never pulled it off like I wanted. When the old CO starting questioning why I hadn't put together a Poker Run like 'he'd asked' I was like .. "what Poker Run? We never discussed that ..." ... soon realized his memory was 180 deg out of sync of mine ..... and I wasn't having any of it.. part of what led me to giving up that patch/position. Still, it's up to the Road Captain to also PLAN the routes... there is where I shine. I get really anal on it all. Personally, I thought I excelled in this area; still do.
Leading the Rides. This is where many don't shine, IMHO. I personally believe this is a borderline art form. One has to be cognizant of the entire group.... From the time you pull out on a KSU , all the way to the destination. Many accelerate out the gate leaving gaps and Slinkys behind them. Many leave folks behind on a turn into traffic, not judging it all correctly. Many can't keep a steady speed. Many haul ass t0o fast for the weakest rider (hey .. guilty.. been there done that.. no more). One has to realize everything they do must be done in unison at some level. Most don't get it. Fact. That's the simple reason I prefer to lead most rides.
Safety Briefs. I'm bad about this. I personally believe we're all big kids and able to figure it all out. But it's amazing how many folks don't fill up their tanks before a ride. How many aren't aware of their bike's shortcomings. So, you have to remind folks to check the air pressure, you name it. Part of the job.
As long as I travel like I do, I won't step up to the position again in the near future. In the meantime, I'll put together my own rides. Part of what I do. Part of what I enjoy. If someone wants to make one.. go for it. From where I sit, most do a shitty job of that one simple thing <sigh> .
