One Thousand Miles, twenty four hour period.
Hmmm.. 11.5 months away... and already on my mind. I'd like to Iron Butt it on the way up, but on the way back worst case. Problem is .. if you wait until the return, you can screw yourself if the weather goes South. Or if some personal thing pops up. But the upside is.... doing it on the way back ... you can ensure there are no time constraints (well.... you still have only 24 hrs). Hell, you can pull into a Rest Area, pop up a hammock and get some Zs. Never done this.. but one could get a cheap room and get several hours of Zs? But on the way up, I tend to be on a tight schedule. You've got a hotel room waiting for you. Shit to do the next day. But, 1000 miles in less than 16 hours ain't a big deal. The big deal to me is... what time to leave. I normally like to depart around 0300, and by sunrise, I'm in the groove and making time. I think in 100 mile increments, with a quick piss stop and gas top off. Take a pic of the odometer and fuel receipt and... press on for another 100. Ten and done. No sit down meals. No BS sessions. Just ...... ride.
As I type this, I believe Wingnut and I are riding the Iron Butt next year. Something to be said about riding in a small group. Larger Groups? Problem is .. quick stops can turn into longer stops. Then that 16 hour ride becomes... 17 .. 18.. 20? The upside is ... safety. This one never used to bother me but... what if one gets Heat Exhaustion? Some other medical issue pops up? I don't worry about the other stuff. I carry a weapon. Carry a credit card and enough cash. Have Insurance for me, the bike and towing. But... still.. an upside in more bodies on a trip.
So... I wait for the Host Hotel to be announced. If I can't get a room in there, then .. close by hotel .. or .. Airbnb?
Can't believe I'm already thinking of all this.. I crack myself up :)
Yeah baby! Dates are set. Hotel reservations made. Folks are chiming in. Several of us may Iron Butt up. Ready!
